Public : Epouse moi !
Oda: Je veux continuer à sortir (lrire)

Jump Festa 2002
Oda n'a rien mangé pendant 2 jours.

Oda: "The big shot I mentioned last year in Jump Festa has not appeared yet in manga. I guess he/she will start to move next year."

My readers ask me "When will Sanji appear?" again and again these days. Hirata-san (Sanji's voice actor) also asks me "When the heck will Sanji appear?"
Next year is Sanji's year!
Finally it's time to reveal the mystery about Sanji's birth! The straw hats who didn't made much appearances in Dressrosa arc will have many highlights next year."
−Some new Oda's illustrations of Tezoro and Luffy in Film Gold were shown.
-The name of Master Necomamushi officially turned out to be based on the song "Let's go to see Master Necomamushi" made by Brook's voice actor 4 years ago.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9eucF9DhZE
#319 617
Recentrer l’histoire sur l’équipage me manque.
#319 623
Top le doubleur de brook.
#319 661
#319 676
A mon avis.

Source : http://apforums.net/showthread.php?t=42229&page=26&p=3674492&viewfull=1#post3674492
- Oda used to say that all he needed was coffee and cola 4 years ago. But now Oda pays attention to his health.
He makes it a rule to drink water 2 liters a day. He thinks he can stay healthy if only he drinks much water. He sometimes exercise on fitness equipments in his studio.
- Oda usually sleeps for 3 hours a day. Oda doesn't want to spend much time on sleep since he is busy.
He can sleep as much as he wants only after the day he finishes drawing every week. But he can't sleep much recently due to aging.
- The interviewer asks Oda if he has some health issues now that he is in his 40s.
Oda answers that his health is not good, but he can come up with an interesting manga thanks to his short sleep and final push in his works.
Oda thinks it would be great if he can draw a good manga with 8-hours-sleep.
- Shueisha allows him to take more breaks these days. Oda wonders if this is because they are worried that ONE PIECE might come to an end due to his health problem.
Oda got hospitalized after he works in Film Z. He thought the staffs finally noticed that if he worked too hard he would be down, but after all he got involved in ONE PIECE Film again...
- There are too many things Oda wants to draw, so he merges the themes of islands. For example, Punk Hazard is originally consisted of fire island and ice island.
Dressrosa is originally consisted of dwarves island and passion island. But as opposed to his expectations, it took him twice the time than usual to draw these arcs.
- According to Oda, ONE PIECE is about 65% done. Oda says it is a fight between his lifetime and the ending of ONE PIECE. He says he needs to have the courage to reduce his ideas.
- After finishing ONE PIECE, Oda wants to go on trips like Buratamori.
(Buratamori is a popular TV show in Japan. In the show, an old man named Tamori, who was too busy to go on a trip for 30 years, visits various kinds of regions in Japan and introduces interesting information about it.)
- Interviewer asks Oda if he intends to draw manga again once a month after finishing ONE PIECE, but Oda instantly denies.
- Oda "I am happiest if kids enjoy reading my manga. But since my audience are getting older, it would be great if they read ONE PIECE with their kids."
- Oda "ONE PIECE is focusing on Sanji now. Be sure to look forward to the future story!"
- Oda "When Kaidou appeared for the first time, I said that Luffy can't defeat such a strong character yet. And I'm yet to know how Luffy would defeat Kaidou.
Probably my audience will not be satisfied if the reason for defeating Kaidou is just because Luffy's punch is so strong. Luffy and I have to find a solution somehow."
- Oda "ONE PIECE will be much more interesting in the future since I'm carefully selecting ideas these days.
Some people are seriously worried about my health, but don't be worried too much since I am quite tough."
#324 477
Merci Kdom !
Oda's long interview was revealed in a TV show today.
- Oda says ONE PIECE is about 70% done. (He said in another recent interview that ONE PIECE was 65% done, though...)
- When Oda held a Takoyaki party in his house, he was reported to police by his neighbors.
- Oda says he doesn't need diversion since he has to submit manga anyway before the deadline.
- The new setting notebook about ONE PIECE is produced almost every 3 weeks.
******************
Here are another trivias revealed in ONE PIECE Great Newspaper Vol.2. and Kinema Junpou 2016 summer edition
- Oda decided to work with ONE PIECE Film because it was a good opportunity to increase his audience in manga.
The series is more than 80 volumes, so he thinks it might be difficult for some people to start reading ONE PIECE.
Oda also says that if he should realize in the future that ONE PIECE Film doesn't play an important role to increase his audience in manga, he would not work with films anymore.
- According to the former anime producer, when ONE PIECE anime was relegated to a morning TV show, Oda complained a bit, "I've already made much effort, though..."
******************
- About this week's (Chapter 833) color spread, Oda predicted last December that he would like to draw Straw Hats watching fireworks since he was impressed at the fireworks in one of his favorite mangas "Your Lie in April".
source: TV show in December 2015 ("一流が嫉妬したスゴイ人";)
******************
According to Volume 777 written by Oda,
- Spandine's political power is weakening due to his disease. Spandam intends to cure him so that Spandam can surpass Lucci.
- Vice Admiral Chaton and Fujitora are friends. Chaton is popular among citizens despite him not being popular in Marine.
He loves beautiful women. His real name is Tokikake.
- Tsuru treats Vice Admiral Momousagi as if she is Tsuru's little sister. Momousagi can seduce various kinds of pirates.
Her famous sword is called Konpira (金毘羅). She has a spider tattoo on her thigh. Her real name is Gion.
- The average height of Giants is 12-13 meters. Oars in Thriller Bark is about 3 times higher than normal Giants.
- Oda writes the conversation between Sabo and Lucci:
Sabo: Bye, Bob!
Lucci: I'm Rob.
- Lucci is a chief commander of CP0 now!
source: Film Gold official guidebook "Backstage Pass"
******************
According to the pamphlet of Film Gold and the official guidebook "Backstage Pass":
- There are sexy scenes in Film Gold, but Oda recently pays attention to his target audience's mothers since he thinks it is mainly mothers who bother to take their kids to theaters.
Oda is worried that sexy scenes might make bad impressions on their mothers.
- Oda doesn't like men wearing white outfits.
- Question: What would you do if you had vast amount of money?
Oda: I already have it, so...
- Oda doesn't want his characters to appear in film before manga. For example, Aokiji after time skip made an appearance in the film before manga.
Oda is disappointed with those situations since he thinks he could have surprised his audience if he let him appear in manga before the film.

Donc 6/7 ans me semble plausible.
#324 490

Here is my brief summary for ONE PIECE editors' talk show in Tokyo Tower today.
- Oda received tons of fan letters asking him to save Ace's life during Marineford War arc.
- Editor Hattori asked Oda every week, "Are you really gonna kill Ace? I don't think it's a good idea.."
- However, Oda didn't understand why many audience are worried about Ace since he planned to kill Ace ever since his first appearance.
- Basic course of events in the story is usually decided before the arc starts. However, Oda didn't have an intention to make Shanks appear in Marineford War.
- Oda asks his editor what kinds of predictions audience have. Oda tries to go beyond their expectations.
- Oda asked his editor, "What do you think if Ace turns out to be Roger's son?" The editor was very surprised to hear that. Oda was satisfied with his reaction and decided to go with this idea.
- Oda goes mad when editor doesn't answer the phone, Editor holds his cell phone in his arms while sleeping so that he can answer the phone from Oda anytime.
- Editor wanted to publish ONE PIECE Magazine every month in 2017, but Shueisha rejected since it would be too risky.
- The cover page of ONE PIECE Magazine volume 3 got revealed. It will be released on September 1st. (Volume 2 will be out on August 4th.)
- Oda's comment about Wano arc will be included in ONE PIECE Magazine volume 2.
- Editor Naito and Sugita already know what will happen in Wano arc. Both of them agree that the climax story in Wano arc is awesome.
- Oda showed his BEST smile when he received a cake in OP 20th celebration party with his family and friends.

Merci à Sandman pour la traduction
Here is my summary for ONE PIECE Magazine volume 2 except for Ace novel and editors' short interview.
- After becoming a mangaka, Oda noticed that his imagination ability of creating various stories is based on Rakugo, Japanese verbal entertainment.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rakugo
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%E8%90%BD%E8%AA%9E
- Oda has been enjoying Rakugo ever since he was in elementary school. When Oda's friends in junior high school came to his house,
he played a cassette tape of Rakugo to entertain them, but all of them got bored in 5 minutes.
- Oda started listening to Rakugo since his parents enjoyed Rakugo via cassette tapes. On the other hand, his elder sister didn't get attracted to it.
He even listened to Rakugo right before sleeping. Oda remembers he was an elementary school kid who fell into asleep thanks to middle-aged man's voice.lol
- When Oda was around 12/13 years old, he was very glad that his parents kindly bought a ticket for Rakugo show in Kumamoto for his birthday present.
- Oda meets Kosanji Yanagiya, one of the best Rakugo performer, once a year in Studio Ghibli. Toshio Suzuki, producer of Ghibli, invites Oda to his Rakugo event every year.
- Oda believes he has never run out of ideas about ONE PIECE story because he knows a lot about classic Rakugo/film/Jidaigeki which survived the test of time.
- Oda devoted himself to watching films in high school/college days. He watched 3 films per day. He got bored with current films soon and started focusing on classics.
- Oda thinks perhaps the sound effect "Don!!" (ドン!!) in ONE PIECE is based on actors' overacting in classic Jidaigeki.
Oda says he wants his audience to pay attention to the "Don!!" panel.
- Oda considers a good sense of rhythm about words is important when creating sentences in ONE PIECE although he doesn't read many books.
Oda sometimes keeps in mind that he should write sentences in 5-7-5 Japanese traditional poetic Haiku form.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku
- The person Oda wants to meet most now is Quentin Tarantino. Oda also says that he has already met most of the people whom he wants to.
- Oda at the age of 3-6 resolved to become a mangaka since he can make a living via drawing manga every day.
- Oda thought he would easily become the best mangaka since he had been confident of his drawing technique, but
he noticed that he needed to learn creating an interesting story when he was around 17 years old.
- Oda was not convinced when his art teacher in junior high school didn't give the best grade to his good Toriyama-ish dragon drawing.
Oda says he thought there was no difference between manga and art.
- Before Oda became a professional mangaka, his editor often advised him to create well-defined manga characters.
Some people even criticized that Luffy in "Romance Dawn" (prototype for ONE PIECE) didn't seem to move on its own.
Oda says that himself didn't fully grasp the personality of Luffy at that time.
- Oda remembers he was a rude person without knowing it before his debut as a professional mangaka.
He talked to a legendary mangaka (HIroshi Motomiya) too casually in a party, which made staffs upset.
- Oda keeps in mind that he should make funny and casual comments in SBS. Oda in childhood had read mangaka talking about their hardships in
creating manga in author's comments. He made up his mind that he wouldn't write such a comment since [he considers audience wouldn't understand it
no matter how mangaka talks about their hardships in detail.
- Bandai company plans to sell OP goods based on SBS drawings of gender-bent/childhood characters although Oda just wants to draw them just for fun.
- Oda says he'd like to keep being "a friendly funny guy in neighborhood" for kids who feels free to answer their requests to make drawings in SBS.
Oda also says his drawings are not something very valuable. He says he is not a kind of mangaka who considers himself, "Even one line drawn by me can make much money!"
***************************
- Oda "Be sure to look forward to Wano country. I refrain from revealing when I draw it, though."
- Oda "There are tons of new characters I want to draw in Wano arc. Characters in ONE PIECE fight mostly on land despite them being pirates.
I'd like to draw some event scenes on the sea which reminds us that they are pirates. Maybe I'll change my mind, though (laugh)"
- When Kuma was introduced for the first time in 2002, Oda told one of his assistants that Kuma would cause the separation of Straw Hats in the future. It came true in 2008.
- The drawings of Amaru Enel are based on a elephant.
- There are some supplements (vitamin, turmeric, ornithine and forskohlii) and Red Bull on Oda's desk...
- Oda is getting excited and doesn't eat food near the deadline for submitting manuscripts. Oda says food would make him sleepy.
On the other hand, his assistants are getting exhausted near the deadline.
- 3 assistants have been working under Oda for more than 15 years.
- Oda had nearly 30 options for Rebecca's name. (Shalom, Violet, Russian, Akiria, Girasole, Laura, Helianthus,
Seneca, Juvenalis, Noir, Vineyard, Iris, Amazonia, Lambda, Isbell and Fabula etc..)
The text says Shalom means peace in Hebrew and some other options mean sunflower in different languages.
- There is an impressive line Oda didn't use in Enies Lobby arc.
Luffy "Robin! Keep laughing! There's nothing to be afraid of! I'm with you!!"
Robin sheds tears remembering Saul's words "Laugh when you are in hardships!! Dereshishishi"

Merci à Sandman d'Arlong park :
Here is my translation for Oda's comment about Shichibukai in ONE PIECE The 23rd Log which is released today.
Oda: I haven't finished ONE PIECE yet despite the 20-year-serialization. The main reason is these guys (Shichibukai).
At first, I intended to finish ONE PIECE in 5 years. It was supposed to be a story to fight against pirates called Yonkou.
However, I came up with the idea of Shichibukai... I just thought, "It would be badass if these characters showed up". Then as you can see, it caused this long serialization!!
Why didn't I make them Gobukai or Nibukai!! (TN: "Go" means 5, "Ni" means 2 and "Shichi" as in Shichibukai means 7 in Japanese.
In short, Oda is saying he should have reduced the number of Shichibukai.) I thought 7 was a cool number!! That being said, I don't regret it since I drew what I wanted. ...I'm regretting a bit!!
The pic below is from 2ch.

Here is my summary for Oda's interview in "Super Kabuki 2 ONE PIECE Grand Live" book released today.
- Oda revealed it will take another 1-2 years for ONE PIECE to enter Wano arc. He also says Wano arc will include an episode about Ace.
- Audience sometimes ask Oda about foreshadowing via fan letters, which makes him think, "OMG! I haven't mentioned it yet!"
When audience ask him, "What are the name of this Luffy's move based on, he searches it on OP fansite. (Similar statement was
found in his author comment in chapter 422 in 2006.) Oda feels as if him and his audience are working together to create ONE PIECE.
- The sound effect "BOOM/DON" (ドン) in ONE PIECE is based on Japanese drums as seen in highlight scenes in Jidaigeki.
(ex. https://youtu.be/FHtrFv7on10?t=44s)
- Oda came up with the idea of Marineford Summit War long ago.
- Oda says it's hard to talk about justice through Luffy's mouth since he is a pirate.
So, Oda just puts a simple conclusion that the opposite side of justice is another justice. Oda says it's one of the main themes of ONE PIECE.
- Oda says ONE PIECE has many flashback scenes as opposed to traditional Shonen mangas which didn't show much detailed backstories of characters.
Oda thinks there are too many mangas out there these days which handles flashbacks.
- Oda's effort for ONE PIECE is divided into drawings (40%) and story (60%).
- Oda says the characteristics of islands in each arc are pretty different so that audience don't get bored.
He also says that the personality of Luffy never changes. According to Oda, now that audience have fully grasped Luffy's personality,
they sometimes complain even when Oda intentionally let Luffy do something unlike him.
- Oda decided to make Luffy's design simple as possible as he could when he started OP since he thought the designs of other characters would gradually become more complicated .
- The fundamental of ONE PIECE is that people help others desperately. Oda believes everyone loves this kind of story.
- Oda already has the idea of how ONE PIECE will end ever since the first chapter. According to another interview in 2012,
Oda said the final arc will be so amazing that it will make Marineford War arc look like nothing.
*You can buy this book on Amazon jp. The price is about 30 US dollars.

Petite correction de sandman :
- Oda revealed it will take another 1-2 years for ONE PIECE to enter Wano arc. He also says Wano arc will include an episode about Ace.
Oda mentioned it in the book released 2 days ago. However, it seems this interview itself was held back in June (page 94), which means it will take about another 7 months - 1 year and 7 months to enter Wano arc from now on based on Oda's estimation.

Encore merci à sandman d'arlong park :
Here is my translation for Oda's message about Law in ONE PIECE the 27th Log released 30 minutes ago
Question: Who have more highlight scenes than you imagined?(#5)
Oda: I have to mention Law. Actually it's not too much to say that all Supernovas have more highlight scenes than I imagined. I created Supernovas right before the chapter where they got introduced. None of them existed in my plot notebooks before that chapter. I was in desperate situation, worrying, "At this rate, Sabaody arc will not be interesting enough." Then, inspiration for 9 Supernovas came to my mind unconsciously. I should have reduced the number of Supernovas since they were too many, but after all, I made all of them appear in manga!! I'm really surprised they survive till now since I thought about half of them would drop out of tough New World already.
They are worst!! They are the worst generation, indeed.
I imagined Kid would become an important character, but...Law!! I didn't imagine he would become such an important character. Weekly serialization is a wonderland.
* Regarding this message, here are some trivia from interviews in 2010 ("Grand Countdown";) and 2017.
- The plan for breaking up Straw Hats was already decided when Kuma was introduced in chapter 233. Editor Onishi advised Oda to spice up the story in Sabaody. Oda replied, "Would it be interesting if new characters appear?"
- Only 3 hours after this advice, Oda finished designing all Supernovas.

Edward Weevil appeared in a newspaper in chapter 903. Here is a funny talk between Oda and editor Sugita about Weevil which was revealed in "Grand Talk Show" on August 23rd, 2017.
Oda said, "A super-cool character will appear soon."
Editor Sugita replied, "Wow, really!? Audience will be glad about it!"
Then, Oda sent the design of Weevil to Sugita.
Sugita thought, "Whaaat!? Does he seriously believe this character is cool? If I tell him that Weevil isn't cool, will Oda-san get angry..?"
Editor is usually supposed to make a phone call to Oda soon after he receives manuscripts, but this time Sugita didn't know what to make a comment for 5 minutes...
Afterward, Oda explained to Sugita about what Weevil will do in the future.
Oda: Weevil is cool for me in that sense.
Sugita was finally convinced to hear that.
#330 749

- ONE PIECE editor Naito said on Twitter live streaming 3 hours ago that Reverie will finish within the next 10 chapters (数週;2-9 weeks). He also said that he doesn't call it Reverie "arc" since it will not last long.
source: https://twitter.com/Eiichiro_Staff/s...18148468310018
- Naito also said that Oda will not spend dozens of chapters on Reverie since Straw Hats need to enter Wano soon.
- Naito said that so many important information is crammed into Reverie that audience may feel like re-reading those chapters.
- "ONE PIECE Doors!" volume 1 will be on sale on June 4th. It will handle cover story drawings and such from chapter 2 to 305. Judging from the live streaming above, it seems Sheusha decided to publish this book since it will remind audience of some characters who appear in Reverie.
- Novel Ace volume 2 will handle his story until he joined Whitebeard Pirates. Shueisha wanted to include further story such as Marineford summit war, but they gave up since the book will be as thick as an encyclopedia. lol

One Piece was rejected twice before the first chapter was published.
Oda doesn't feel like he's carrying the burden of being the headliner of Jump. He's just happy that so many people are reading his magazine. However he does strive to write more interesting stories.
He says he feels a strong sense of responsibility. If OP ended and his editors asked him to continue, he wouldn't want to. Ending it is his freedom.
Shanks is described as the leader of the Red Haired Pirates and a Yonkou who gave the hat to Luffy
One Piece manga is described as 'Chasing after the One Piece treasure left by the Pirate King, Luffy went out to sea! His many adventures are popular both inside and out of Japan!'
He says it is 'very lonely' now that Kishimoto, who published alongside him for 15 years is no longer doing so.
He says he and Kishimoto are the same age and their mangas became a hit around the same time, they have a lot in common.
However he says that even between mangaka who have known each other a long time, there are some things you can't say to each other if the popularity of your manga differs
However he says that he and Kishimoto often see eye to eye, they worry about the same things and both put a lot of effort into their work
Even if there appears a mangaka whose work catches up to One Piece's in popularity and scope, the only one he feels he will always share the same views with is Kishimoto.
He says that even though Kishimoto isn't publishing anymore, they still chat and Kishimoto listens to his complaints
He says that people are now enjoying different kinds of magazines, and it's less common for everyone to be reading the same manga
Oda thinks this is a shame, he used to bond with people over reading Dragon Ball. He says manga can build bonds between people, especially magazines such as Jump that people read in their childhoods
he wonders if different magazines and mangas can come together like the Avengers.
when he reads Jump nowadays he feels like he doesn't understand some of the mangas, thinking like a grandfather would.
He's aware of this and wants to take countermeasures against it. He says the competition is not about being right, but rather whether your manga is embraced by the audience. As a result he says that if One Piece loses out to them, he will do a bit more research but that hasn't happened yet, he's been winning so far.

Source Arlong park :

- According to an interview with Yomiuri magazine today, Eiichiro Oda mentioned that The One Piece manga finished about 80%..
- In his interview with Yomiuri, Oda mentions that his favorite characters are Bun Clay and Ivankov from "The Impel Down Arc", Oda mentions that there are still some characters who will join the straw hat crew
- Oda talked about why he did not include Jinbei in the color pages (missed 8 times) despite joining the crew and apparently it was because he doesn't want to spoil one of the surprises about Jinbei's situation since his last appearance.
#331 419
On va compter large.
#331 427
#331 436

#331 457

https://www.reddit.com/r/BokuNoHeroAcademia/comments/94i41l/
ohei Horikoshi and Eiichiro Oda special interview.
Translation by Bomber D. Rufi
The man that Horikoshi looks up to –Eiichiro Oda. In 16 years the boy now walks shoulder to shoulder with his hero as a “serialized artist”. What kind of conversation will they have now that they're here?
Having an extreme formative experience in manga (comics):
In the illustration corner of “One Piece” Twenty Third Volume: Usopp Gallery Pirates, is where the two made first contact. Horikoshi-sensei, how did you feel about having your work published for the first time?
ODA: That was a good volume. It was the last for Alabasta, with the famous “Proof of Friendship” scene.
HORIKOSHI: I was shaken.
Shaken!?
HORIKOSHI: Yes. I believe that was when I was in high school, and to discover that one of my drawings was printed there on the page caused me to break out in the shakes. I was still shaken when I showed my mom the picture too.
ODA: It's good you're close to your family. (Laughs).
How many drawings had you contributed?
HORIKOSHI: Just the one.
Incredible! What made you decide to send it?
002
(Side text- Young Horikoshi meets his hero.)
HORIKOSHI: My friend and I love One Piece so we both decided to send artwork in. We both drew incredible things, but only mine made it into the gallery.
ODA: It's as if you were the one to get the green light at an idol audition. (Laugh.)
HORIKOSHI: Are you the one who writes the commentary, Oda-sensei?
(Side text- My name has been engraved into “One Piece” for eternity!)
ODA: Yup, I do. I write it as Usopp.
HORIKOSHI: I'm so thankful....ahh, I mean overjoyed.
I think it's incredible you managed to make it in with just one submission. Did this experience affect your life as a mangaka? HORIKOSHI: To be honest I was quite satisfied with that drawing....(laughs).
ODA: Oh in a “My art was good enough to be published” way?
HORIKOSHI: No, more like a “Wow it was published! Now my name will be carved into One Piece for eternity!!” Sort of thing. I was totally satisfied with just that.
Everyone laughs.
ODA: I wonder if it would have been better if you were more frustrated (laughs).
Might you have been more inspired if it had been rejected instead?
HORIKOSHI: No, no, it took a bit of time but I did believe that I should take manga more seriously.
You mean between the experience of success and the actual feeling of making it?
HORIKOSHI: Right.
ODA: At the time, social media hadn't yet become widespread, so there weren't as many opportunities to give people a place to display their artwork. So that's why having it published in print gives me a strange sense of happiness. Even I like to give as many opportunities as possible to show off people's artworks on that page I've created.
Inquiring about the confession five years into serialization.
Horikoshi-sensei, you were able to tell Oda-sensei about the artwork in 2015, after quite a bit of time had passed, right?
ODA: Even before “HeroAca” was serialized we met at New years parties, right? Although you hadn't yet had a “hit” right?
Oda-sensei at that point you were in volume 77 of One piece..
003
And you wrote “You should have said something sooner!” (Laughs.)
ODA: That's right! You shouldn't have been so reserved!
HORIKOSHI: I was just too embarrassed. For me to speak up about something like that when my serializations were in the back of the magazine...even if I had the opportunity it just didn't feel right.
ODA: I see, that might have been the right decision. It'd be more helpful for me to cheer you on if you had a manga currently serialized. (laughs.) So you spoke up because now you had the pride of serializing a hit manga then?
Horikoshi: Hmmmm....
--Shouldn't you be more proud of your achievement? (Laugh.)
HORIKOSHI: Where you say pride, I more feel embarrassment.
(Side text- So you spoke up because now you had the pride of serializing a hit manga then?)
Any Oda-isms that have had a huge influences on you?
--Horikoshi-sensei has One Piece had any influences on you?
HORIKOSHI: How do I put this...I suppose having characters say things that I feel naturally is one influence I've taken from One Piece.
ODA: Well, when I first started serialization, things were different –a character saying things that Luffy does was seen as embarrassing.
HORIKOSHI: Ohh? But it feels like everyone in my age group was writing like that.
ODA: That makes me happy. Back then I was pretty young and it felt like I was rebelling against current fads. Back then it was pretty popular for girls hair to be braided inward, so I did the opposite when I drew.
004
--So you proceeded by doing the opposite of the opposite?
ODA: It just didn't feel right to me unless it stood out. At the time I was told a lot that my art was really weird, so I didn't dare to dream that anyone would be influenced by me in later years.
HORIKOSHI: I was influenced by how your characters have very small eyes. However I couldn't quite draw it all that well and had a lot of trouble....So lately I've been drawing them a little bigger than before (laughs).
ODA: I've been doing the same thing (laughs).
--Horikoshi-sensei has One Piece influenced you in any other areas –aside from artwork?
HORIKOSHI: I love the Arlong Arc. Especially the exchange (between Luffy and Nami) “Help me...” and “Of course!!” I thought that part was especially cool, and I wanted to draw a Luffy like protagonist. Oh and this week's One Piece chapter was crazy good. (Jump has a scattered turnover)
--Lots of past characters showed up during the Reverie, huh?
ODA: It was pretty shocking huh? (Laughs) The serialization has gone for a long time so I'm able to have characters who appeared in the past show up again, but there are probably many readers of Jump who don't quite get what's going on. Maybe the people who read by volume are deeply familiar with what's going on, but those who read Jump probably haven't read everything...
005
ODA: So I had to include the past events so they wouldn't miss anything.
HORIKOSHI: Huh? Does that happen?
ODA: Quite often, to a surprising extent. When they aren't doing the polls it's like “I'm so happy that this character is popular!” And then when I draw them people say “I don't know who this is.” (Laugh).
HORIKOSHI: Huh!!~
ODA: When the serialization runs long those things happen.
--The one who's easiest to draw is not surprising oneself.
Oda-sensei what are your impressions of Horikoshi-sensei?
ODA: As the face of the next generation of big hit hero artists.
HORIKOSHI: I can't believe that.
ODA: My daughter will happily sing the “HeroAca” anime theme songs on bus outings, and it'll get everyone in a good mood. At home she'll ask “Dad is your manga going to be okay” She's really worried about One Piece.
HORIKOSHI: I'm thankful to hear that, but it's a bit....(laughs).
(Side text- My daughter will happily sing the “HeroAca” anime theme songs on bus outings, and it'll get everyone in a good mood.)
ODA: But I am a little concerned since it's a manga with a lot of characters.
--Why's that?
ODA: When there are a lot of characters to draw it gets difficult to unify the work as a whole, and properly, but if you are able to properly establish and understand the characters then the work will be a hit. It can lead to a lot of needless anxiety. I will say this though, I've always been impressed by Horikoshi-sensei's comic covers. They look great, and the sense of style is on point –and you're able to come up with some very good ones.
HORIKOSHI: Thank you so much that makes me so ridiculously happy.
ODA: What do you use to color them?
HORIKOSHI: Photoshop.
ODA: Oh so you use computers?
HORIKOSHI: Yes, I did get a little tired of using them so for volume 18's cover I went back to using analog (hand painting) it was overwhelmingly fun.
ODA: You like American Comics right? Your style of artwork is influenced by them.
HORIKOSHI: Yeah. I've read all of “Spiderman” and “Deadpool”.
--And what about character personalities?
HORIKOSHI: Ah, for this Oda-sensei is a huge influence. I thought to myself “I really want to draw a lively character like Luffy!!” But in the end I ended up drawing a character nothing like him and more like myself –an otaku who has a penchant for over analysis.
006
(Top text- A Shikishi that Oda-sensei drew ahead of time. To keep from dirtying Luffy, Horikoshi carefully draws beside him.)
HORIKOSHI: and at the end of that, just a bit of brightness added in for good measure which harmonizes into Deku the protagonist.
--The relationship between weekly manga artists and movies.
--How were you involved in this movie?
HORIKOSHI: I was involved and contributed to the script phase, and did the final character designs. If I had more time to, I would have done more.
ODA: If I said something like that (laughs) it would be endless. From the start, I said that the weekly serialization is most important to me, and I didn't want to do anything to disturb it.
HORIKOSHI: M—My stomach hurt. I thoughtlessly said “I want to do more”....
--This is the first movie for HeroAca. At the time it was confirmed how did you feel?
HORIKOSHI: I was really happy. I thought that getting an anime confirmed was the peak of my happiness –my dreams had come true. I really didn't think I'd get anymore than that so when they said the series would get a movie, I was like “Seriously?! No way!!”
ODA: I attended the screening on the morning of it's premiere and was moved by all the people lined up to see it.
HORIKOSHI: You were in the audience....
ODA: But I wasn't really able to talk to any of my readers live there.
(Side text- I was really happy. I thought that getting an anime confirmed was the peak of my happiness –my dreams had come true. I really didn't think I'd get anymore than that.)

Oda: Luffy's statue will be displayed!!
I'm super-excited about this news! I thought such an honorable opportunity would be given
to only those legendary national mangakas around the age of 70 who have a 50-year-serialization.
Actually I was recently awarded Prefecture Honor Award from Kumamoto, my hometown.
The prize winners are supposed to plant a tree in front of Prefecture Office, but since I'm a mangaka,
they kindly decided to build Luffy's statue. I guess it will take about an hour to arrive there by car from Kumamoto Airport.
OMG!! A celebration statue!! The statue will be publicly displayed at the unveiling ceremony on November 30th.
An event will be held as well. The quality of the statue is awesome! It will be proudly displayed in a promenade in front of Kumamoto Prefectural Office.
It's not common that someone has a kindness to build a statue for you. I'm thankful to my hometown.
If you travel Kumamoto, be sure to take a pic with Luffy's statue!!
2 years have passed since the large earthquake hit Kumamoto. In the meantime, another disasters hit some areas in Japan.
We need to do what we can to help those victims. It would be great if the number of tourists to Kumamoto will increase through this Luffy's statue!
Finally, Luffy's statue will be displayed! I'd appreciate it if you enjoy it for a long time!!
*Luffy says, "My statue? Really!? Thank you !!"
*Sadly some Kumamoto citizens were against the idea of spending $0.1 2 million prefecture money on this statue,
but after the fact that Oda made a donation of about $7 million (800 million yen) to Kumamoto was revealed, the naysayers became silent.

As you know, full name of ONE PIECE author is Eiichiro Oda. First name is usually given by parents in Japan.
Then, what does "Eiichiro" (栄一郎) mean in Japanese? Ei (栄) means glory (flourish) and Ichiro (一郎) is a common name for a first-born son.
FYI, Akira Toriyma's first name Akira (明) means bright/wise.
Oda's parents must be happy about their son being "glorious" mangaka just like his own name.
3 days ago, Luffy's statue started being displayed near Kumamoto prefecture office, Oda's hometown.
Oda's parents made comments about this statue.
Oda's father: It'd be great if everybody is glad about Luffy's statue. Hopefully this statue will become famous all over the world.
(The latter part translation is ambiguous. Maybe Oda's father is hoping that Kumamoto people will succeed globally like ONE PIECE.)
Oda's mother: My son is saying that he will keep supporting Kumamoto. I'd appreciate it if people love Luffy's statue for a long time.
*Oda's father is good at Western painting style.
